Are Your Glutes Asleep?

Have you ever noticed that your low back feels sore after standing or sitting for a while, or maybe your hamstrings feel tight no matter how much you stretch? One of the sneaky culprits I often see in my practice is “sleepy glutes.”

When the muscles in your butt aren’t firing the way they should, your body recruits other muscles to do the job. That usually means your back, hamstrings, or even your hips are working overtime. Over time, this can lead to discomfort, poor movement patterns, and pain that doesn’t seem to go away.

The good news is you can teach your glutes to turn back on. Think of it as giving your muscles a little “nudge” to remember how to work. The simplest, most effective exercise to do this is a glute bridge. Not only does it activate the gluteus maximus, the “butt muscles”, it also stretches the hip flexors in the front of the hips. However, if your glutes have not been firing properly for a long time it may not be easy to connect and activate them.

Check out the videos below! One is a short, simple demo. The other is a detailed explanation with lots of great tips for beginners.

When your glutes are activated and strong, your body feels the difference. Benefits include: less low back pain, better posture and hip stability and more strength and power in everyday activities.

Waking up these muscles can be the missing link if you’ve struggled with nagging back discomfort or tightness that just won’t quit. It only takes a few minutes. Give yourself the gift of strength and agility!
